Saoirse Ronan, most recently seen kicking ass to techno music in Hanna, is set to be invaded. Ronan has been cast as Melanie, a young woman whose mind is besieged by a parasitic alien, in the film adaptation of The Host – a.k.a. that one Stephenie Meyer book that doesn’t involve pouty vampires.

The bestselling sci-fi novel follows Melanie and Wanderer, the extraterrestrial “soul” that has taken over her brain, as they experience a sort of paranormal Stockholm Syndrome. Ronan would play both roles, or more specifically, a role within a role, a daunting task that I’m sure the Oscar-nominated actress is more than up to. The film’s producers may be looking to make the character a bit younger: In the book, Melanie is 20 years old, while Ronan is 17.

Everyone knowing Stephenie Meyer for her Twilight series novels about young vampires, not to forget that she also wrote The Host, a science-fiction novel, two years ago in 2008. More than two million hardcovers copies have been sold since then.

Selling the screen rights and The Host is currently in pre-production. Casting process and auditions for the movie are now on-going, with filming set to start next year in early 2011.

Nick Wechsler Productions and Chockstone Pictures are teaming up to produce this long awaited film. Andrew Niccol is going to direct the whole thing. Niccol lately produced, wrote (screenplay), and directed the highly awaited Sci-Fi film ‘The Cross’ where you can see Orlando Bloom. His nomination for an Academy Award in 1999 for “The Truman Show“.

Stephenie Meyer’s take on the book being made into a movie her response was, “Definetely im excited to be working with Paula Mae Schwartz, Nick Weschler and Steve and to make The Host to a visual format. They have all been a dream to be with and make such a thing, so beautiful and collaborative, also I feel like we’re in a really good position to make a great movie together. And then having Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly amazing.”

Stephenie Meyer's 'The Host' Could Begin Filming Next Year

With the film installments of her "Twilight" novels not yet fully completed, Stephenie Meyer is already well into the development of her next film franchise. According to Deadline.com, the adaptation of the author's first adult novel, "The Host," could go before cameras as early as next year.

Published in 2008, the book involves benevolent yet parasitic aliens who have taken over the minds of almost all the humans on Earth. Upon its release, Meyer described the plot to MTV News as " 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers,' if the aliens had won."

Although financing is not yet in place and no definite shooting schedule is planned for the sci-fi/horror hybrid, producer Steve Schwartz divulged that "Truman Show" Oscar-nominee Andrew Niccol is currently working on his third draft of the screenplay, with the author's close involvement. Niccol is also signed on to direct the film.

Schwartz, who is now budgeting the project with co-producers Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler, again noted that Meyer handpicked the filmmaker because Niccol's directorial debut, "Gattaca," is one of her favorite science-fiction films. However, his hire was not immediate.

"We spent time with Andrew," Schwartz explained. "Listened to his vision, introduced Andrew to Stephenie and she responded. There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we've seen, we think she was right."

Fans will have to wait and see if Meyer is also right about her dream cast for the film, which she told MTV News in 2008 includes Robert Redford, Matt Damon and both Ben and Casey Affleck. Another uncertainty is when — or if — Meyer will ever finish her two planned sequels to "The Host."

Regardless of whether or not the adaptation spawns further novels or movies, a 2011 shoot could put "The Host" in theaters before the "Twilight Saga" ends, depending on when the second part to the two-film adaptation of "Breaking Dawn" is released.

Plus, with Meyer's announcement of the "Eclipse" spin-off novella"The short Second life of Bree Tanner", there's now a tease that Summit Entertainment could extend the hot vampire film series even further than a fifth installment.

With sales of more than 70m copies she is the queen of teen vampire romance, but Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has announced that she's "a little burned out on vampires".

Asked on the Oprah Winfrey show if she'd consider writing another book in the Twilight quartet, Meyer said that she had no immediate plans to return to the story of human teenager Bella and her vampire love interest Edward. "I think I need a little break," she said. "I've got to cleanse the palate ... I'm a little burned out on vampires right now."

Her next book, she said, was likely to be a follow-up to her one adult novel The Host – about the invasion of earth by a species which takes over the minds of humans while leaving their bodies intact – which she sees as a trilogy, but it could also be something "completely different". "I have another book that's kind of been itching in the back of my brain, that's completely unrelated, totally fantasy. So fantasy it'll have a map in the front – that's always the judge, right?" she said.

Having envisioned it as a longer series and "know[ing] what happens" to Bella and Edward in the future, Meyer said she "may" come back to the world of Twilight, but "I wrapped up [fourth novel] Breaking Dawn in a way that I felt satisfied with, so if that moment didn't come I'd feel OK".

She's also musing over whether to go back to Midnight Sun, which tells the story of the romance from the perspective of vampire Edward. An unfinished draft was leaked on the internet last year, prompting the author to put the project "on hold indefinitely".

"I need to feel alone with something to be able to write it and I do not feel alone with that manuscript at this point. So many people have chimed in on it," she said. "I'm over the shock of it but not over the feeling that everyone's involved now, and it doesn't feel like mine so much anymore. I 'm hoping that with a little time, time to write something else, get my head out of it for a while ... it's so clear in my head, I'd like to go back to it."

The film of New Moon, the second book in the series, is released this week.

As many of you probably heard, Stephenie was on Oprah talking about the release of New Moon. Given all the hype surrounding the movie, I didn't expect The Host to even be mentioned, but it was! [At least in some backstage interviews.]

Meyer says The Host is "kinda [her] favorite thing she's ever done. I see that as a three book series so I'll probably go back into that one again. We're working on the movie right now so I'm sort of spending time with those characters so it's likely so will be my next move..."

She also talks about why she likes The Host more than Twilight! ;)

One of the weirdest things for me about success is how it sucks away your time. I'm successful because I write books, but that very success takes all my writing time! It's very frustrating. I'm just itching to get back into a fantasy world right now, but the real world won't let me. I thought this would be a writing year, but unless you count emails as writing, it didn't work out that way. I was able to do a few smaller things that will show up here and there—an extra chapter for the release of The Host in paperback, that kind of thing. I've really worked to clear my time, but that is a slow and ongoing process. Of course, another aspect is that I am more burned out by the last five years than I even realized.

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series books (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn) aren't her only best-sellers - as you well know. Her book, The Host, also claimed top marks on the charts (and for good reason).

The Host follows the ninth life of "Wanderer," a "soul," who makes her way to Earth for the first time as a human being. Her host body, though, becomes a strange thing for Wanderer because the human soul of Melanie, the body, refuses to disappear and make way for her own cognitive control.

Wanderer and Melanie form an indescribable (though thoroughly described by Stephenie Meyer, of course) bond through this experience, and Wanderer seeks out those who Melanie (and vicariously Wanderer) loves. Her experience amongst those individuals - particularly the characters Jared, Jamie, Ian, and Jeb - is the crux of the story, and Wanderer's challenge is to keep Melanie "alive" during her incorporation into the group.

In September, the news came out that this book was, like most of Meyer's other books, going to be made into a film. After the initial reports, Meyer expressed an interest in what fans would have to say about potential castmates for the future film. Despite the unending excitement going on in the Twilight film series world, many fans have been putting together their own set of suggestions for that very thing.

The characters which are most ardently discussed by fan-casters are, naturally, Melanie, Jared, Jamie, Jeb, and Ian.

Actors thrown into the hat of suggestions for the character Melanie are (and this is not an exhaustive list, of course) Sophia Bush, Megan Fox, Camilla Belle, Olivia Wilde, Summer Glau, Milla Jovovich, Natalie Portman, Amanda Peet, Evangeline Lilly, Rose Byrne, Eliza Dushku, and Jodi Gordon. A common trait amongst some of these women is the sense of strength and toughness that Melanie Stryder embodies in the book.

For Jared, the consensus is pretty strong amongst the fans that Jensen Ackles should play the part, but other suggestions also linger such as James McAvoy, Jesse Metcalf, Benjamin McKenzie, Jared Padalecki, Hugh Jackman, Chris Pine, Matt Damon, and Chris Evans (with a few Gerard Butler and Jeffrey Dean Morgan pluggers along the way). The thing about the character Jared is that he has to be fierce and ruthless at times, but he has to also be a softy deep down.

With Jamie, the casting is especially fun because he is a character that is young, curious, tolerant, independent, and exceptionally wise and kind. He is also the character that Melanie (and by association Wanderer - "Wanda," by then) has the deepest affection for. Some suggestions have included Logan Lerman, Josh Hutchenson, Allan Hyde, and Justin Bieber.

Perhaps it's his gun-toting, thick-skinned, brute-but-lovable character resume, but Sam Elliott, to most, is a pretty perfect fit for Jeb. Jeb's character is the sly and authoritative protector-type who speaks when necessary and is the first to put his foot down (or his gun in the air, as the case may be). Other suggestions have included Harrison Ford, Hugh Laurie, and Willie Nelson, but Elliott seems to hone in on the Jeb-ness pretty universally where fans are concerned.

Ian, on the other hand, is a character that brings in suggestions from across the entire board. While there are quite a few who contend that Ian Somerhalder is a good match for the character, Chace Crawford, Christian Bale, Sean Faris, Henry Cavill, Marc Blucas, Tom Welton, and, once again, James McAvoy are all actors that have been fan-vetted for the role.

Where there are a host (pun clearly intended) of other roles at play in the fan-casting fun, these are some of the major ones at issue in the fan community.

Oh, but the fun certainly does not stop there. Not only are fans creating their fantasy Host teams, many have also created fan-made trailers for the film as well as movie posters. Here are a couple that are really great.

I'm so excited to be working with Nick Weschler, and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz to bring The Host to a visual format. They've all been a dream to work with, so lovely and collaborative, and I feel like we're in a really good place to make a great movie together. And then to have Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly awesome. If you've never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It's such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I'm having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn't take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I'm looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.

Producers acquire Meyer's 'Host'

Trio use own money to buy screen rights to novel

Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have used their own money to acquire screen rights to "The Host," the first adult novel written by Stephenie Meyer, author of the "Twilight" series.
Andrew Niccol will write the script and direct.
Meyer's novel is a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species of benevolent parasites that call themselves "Souls." One such soul, the Wanderer, is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth.
Wechsler and the Schwartzes are separately teamed on "The Road," the John Hillcoat-directed adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel that will be released Nov. 25 by the Weinstein Co. They are also producing the Paul Schrader-scripted "The Dying of the Light" and an adaptation of Pete Takada book "An Eye at the Top of the World," which Ryne Douglas Pearson is adapting.
In addition to writing four volumes of the "Twilight" series, Meyer has been heavily involved in the screen transfers, and she spurned several overtures for "The Host." The producers continued lobbying the author and her UTA reps with a significant offer, a strong vision for the project and a collaborative spirit. Meyer eventually said yes.
In fact, Niccol first came under consideration after Wechsler and the Schwartzes asked Meyer what her favorite science fiction films are. "Gattaca" and "The Truman Show" were in her top five; Niccol wrote and directed "Gattaca" and scripted the Peter Weir-directed "The Truman Show."
Niccol most recently wrote and directed Orlando Bloom starrer "The Cross."
"We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions," Wechsler said. "Twilight" has "proven she knows more about what works than most."
Summit releases the second adaptation of Meyers' vampire series, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," on Nov. 20.

Stephenie Meyer uses 'The Host' merchandising to help the homeless

Twilight series novelist Stephenie Meyer is now the market-wise benefactor of charitable institutions for the homeless.

Her fifth published novel,The Host will be merchandised by a fledgling skating gear company called Hobo Skate Co. Hobo benefits local charities in assistance of the homeless.

Meyer's interest in working with Hobo Skate Co., according to a report that quotes one of the company's co-founders, stemmed from the charitable nature of the organization and its promise of future collaboration with these local groups (once a profit is attainable and available for share). Chances are, Meyer's marketing deal with Hobo will bring them to that point sooner rather than later.

"The Host" is about alien parasites who take over humans - more appealing to the skater crowd. Hobo shirts and decks feature images of the alien.

... Meyer is involved in the design process, and, in fact, wanted to tweak one of the designs at the last minute, delaying the debut of the "Host" merchandise until next week.

It will be available online at first and then in major retailers.

This isn't the first time Meyer has taken part in a major charity drive. Earlier this year, she joined hands with fellow authors in the Save the Book Babe event, raising thousands of dollars by donating very sentimental pieces of memorabilia.

Perhaps I haven't been paying attention, but I didn't know that Hachette Books was so accomodating to those still on the fence as to whether or not to buy Stephenie Meyer's books.

At their website, they have a clever tool for internet users, who can browse all of Meyer's works for free when deciding whether or not to pick them up.

Much like you would be able to browse a book in the bookstore before deciding to purchase it, you can take your time and check all of her works out before deciding to purchase one on-line or in bookstores.

Provided below are the portals to do so. Check them out! They're really very neat.

Of course, it's impossible to read Meyer's hundreds of pages of text through this medium, but it's a nice way for those who haven't read the series and The Host yet to get acquainted with the texts.

The 'other' Stephanie Meyer book, "The Host"

The Host is written by Stephanie Meyer and was published in May 2008. In my opinion this is a great book that I would recommend to all readers, especially Stephanie Meyer fans. Meyer wrote this book around the same time that she was working on the last book of the well known Twilight series. The story line captures your attention and keeps you wondering what will happen next. Even the chapter titles (Needed, Ambushed, Horrified) make you want to read more.

The book is set in the post alien invasion period of earth. Aliens with no true bodies need to attach themselves to others-much like parasites. There are only a few "survivors," which are the people that haven't become hosts for the aliens. The aliens call themselves "souls" and take over whatever host body they decide to inhabit. The "souls" are placed in the host body by cutting the back of the host's neck. They are then laid in the open wound and attach themselves. They then erase the human's mind and go about the normal activities of that person because they still have all of memories of the host body.

One human survivor, Melanie, is captured while looking for her cousin and has a soul named Wanderer placed inside her. Melanie fights back and refuses to give up her body. As a result, Melanie and Wanderer form a relationship of sorts and eventually set out to find Melanie's boyfriend, Jared, and brother, Jamie.

The book discusses the obstacles they encounter on their journey and the dangers of being caught by a Seeker, a soul that seeks out survivors of the initial invasion. The Seekers either bring the human in to have another soul implanted to try to find out information of any other humans or they "dispose" of them. One Seeker seems very interested in trying to extract information from Wanderer about where Melanie had come from and if there were others.

Melanie is able to stop Wanderer from accessing memories that would put her family in danger. She only allows Wanderer to see certain memories and Wanderer begins to love and care about Melanie's family. It is because of this that they begin their journey to find them, hoping that they are still alive and safe.

The characters are fascinating and ever-changing. You begin to understand and care about what happens to the main characters, Melanie and Wanderer, which are really two characters in one body. I give this book a perfect 10.

Best Sci-fi book 2008

Robert Thompson, better known as the Fantasy Book Critic, has turned his eyes to the best fantasy and scifi novels of 2008, along with some games and comics too.

The Kingdom Beyond the Waves was his best fantasy novel, with The Host by Stephenie Meyer heading up the SF section, although he admits this is more of a romance play (but nothing wrong in that).

'Twilight' Author Stephenie Meyer To Direct Vampire-Free Jack's Mannequin Video

To the casual observer, a team-up between Stephenie Meyer, author of the best-selling "Twilight" book series, and Andrew McMahon, the singer/songwriter known as Jack's Mannequin, doesn't seem to make much sense. But luckily, fans of both tend to be anything but casual.

So, in some way, the following news shouldn't come as a shock to those who worship at the altar of Edward Cullen or the Mannequin: Meyer has been tapped to direct the video for "The Resolution," the first single from JM's upcoming album The Glass Passenger (due September 30). Production is set to get under way next week in Los Angeles and is based on a treatment Meyer wrote. And while details on the project are difficult to come by, McMahon himself told MTV News that fans can be on the lookout for "a good amount of water," some fictional aquatic creatures but — sadly — a grand total of zero vampires.

"Yeah, there are no vampires in the treatment. There may be a mermaid, but I'm not sure. I don't want to give away too much, because we're letting [Meyer] run with her vision. ... I mean, I will say there's a good amount of water in the video and ... what else can I say?" he said Thursday (August 28). "It's cool. It's not some sort of exposé on my life. ... It's nice to know we're going to make a video for the sake of making a video. [We're] making something that's kind of fantastic and different and exciting but isn't about the song specifically, and it isn't about me specifically."

Of course, as any "Twilight" fan will tell you, Meyer is an avid music fan — she posts playlists on her Web site that are meant to be sorta-scores to each of her books — and she's long been a proponent of McMahon's work. So the collaboration seems like even more of a no-brainer — to everyone except for McMahon, that is. Seems he's still relatively new to the whole "Twilight" phenomenon.

"I'm quickly becoming super-aware of how big of a deal it is. I'm partway into 'Twilight' now. ... I found out about Stephenie through a close friend, who told me, 'I don't know if you know this, but you're referenced in a couple of places on Stephenie's Web site as being a musical inspiration for what she does,' and I was obviously incredibly flattered, especially considering the finger she has on a lot of pop culture," he said. "So we were getting to this place where we were getting video treatments, and we had seen a lot of good things, but nothing that was really jumping out at us. And I was talking to someone at the label, and I said, 'You know, let's try to do something different. Let's approach this video in a completely different way, like, rather than going out to a bunch of video directors and trying to do business as usual, let's try and come up with something clever.' And immediately, Stephenie Meyer came to my head.

"So I said, 'Can I reach out to her and see if she'd be interested in writing for the video and coming out and directing it?' And we got her music, and she was fantastic, and we've been working with her ever since," he continued. "And it works so well, because [with my music], I always try to create something super-visual and create a backdrop where people can take a bunch of experiences but relate them. And she's done that in a huge way with her books."
But now that he's indoctrinated in the ways of "Twilight," is McMahon bummed out that the video for "Resolution" isn't going to feature a single bloodsucker? Not at all. In fact, he's just happy that Meyer is onboard for the project. After all, she is rather busy these days.

"She seems genuinely enthusiastic about it. She's in the middle of editing her film right now, so I guess the implication is that she's excited because she's taking time away from her baby to make it," McMahon laughed. "But, like I said, I'm most excited because, when I was making this album, I wanted to find someone who was really talented and get them to write a treatment and just leave it alone and let it fly. And that's exactly what we're doing here."

REVIEW: The Host by Stephenie Meyer

While I didn’t think it was perfect, I did enjoy your first young adult novel, Twilight. So when my fellow blogger Jia was unable to get too far into The Host, a genre-bending speculative romantic thriller and your first book for adults, I agreed to give it a try. The premise of The Host, that of an “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” type story but told from the viewpoint of a body snatching alien, sounded interesting and different to me.

I must admit at the outset of this review that I almost never read books this long (600+ pages), because they can seem more like monumental tasks than like invitations for enjoyment. It took me around 120 pages to get caught up in The Host, and for those 120 I feared that a monumental task was what the book would turn out to be. Happily, The Host eventually revved up, and I enjoyed it more than I expected I would in the beginning.
The Host opens with a scene in which an alien known as Wanderer is inserted into the body of her host, a human woman named Melanie. At this point in the story, most of the people on Earth have been taken over by a parasitic alien species whose members refer to themselves as the souls. The souls inhabit the bodies of their hosts and take control of them. They have done so before on other planets and they believe they are making Earth a better, more harmonious place by doing so here.
Wanderer has asked to be placed in the body of an adult, but this presents a big problem for her because Melanie, her host, was one of the last surviving people captured by the seekers (a group of souls who devote themselves to searching out the remaining humans and capturing them so they can be hosts for other souls). Melanie attempted suicide in order to resist capture, and now that Wanderer occupies her body, Melanie’s consciousness refuses to go away. While Wanderer has physical control of the body, Melanie’s consciousness talks back to her and makes her life miserable.
In Melanie’s body Wanderer is bombarded by intense memories and dreams that center around a man named Jared, whom Melanie loved. It turns out that the souls are often drawn to other souls who occupy the bodies of the humans whom the people their own bodies belonged to once loved.
The seekers, and one of them most particularly, are interested in Wanderer’s new memories. It’s their job to capture the remaining humans who have formed a resistance and they believe that the memories Wanderer may have attained from Melanie may contain some knowledge of these humans’ whereabouts.

But when Wanderer attempts to access the information Melanie knew, which should now be available to her, she is blocked by walls that Melanie puts up to protect the humans she loved from the seekers. Wanderer’s inability to do as the seeker assigned to her has requested and provide the necessary information stymies and frustrates her, and she is so caught up in the struggle between Melanie and herself that she is unable to form friendships and relationships.
When the seeker suggests that Wanderer leave Melanie’s body for another human body, and allow the seeker to take over Melanie and mine her memories before killing Melanie, Wanderer is at first upset by the suggestion but eventually realizes she may have no other choice but to leave the body that resists her presence.
But before she takes that drastic step, Wanderer wants to visit the healer who inserted her into Melanie’s body, and see if he can help her. She decides to drive from California to Chicago in order to do so. While on her drive, Wanderer is again assailed by memories that belong to Melanie. She realizes that she may be near the humans’ sanctuary and close to the man she and Melanie both love.

With the help of Melanie, who does not want to die, Wanderer finds the human resistance. But what awaits her there isn’t exactly a warm welcome… and the man she remembers loving treats her as the enemy. Much of The Host is the story of how Wanderer eventually earns the humans’ trust and finds love and acceptance, and how the humans find hope. There is also a romantic tangle unlike any other I’ve encountered in the pages of a book, between Wanderer, Melanie and Jared… and eventually, another man who is thrown into the mix.
I liked that the story focused on the interpersonal relationships and on the moral and sociological issues resulting from the science fiction premise. Your website says that The Host is science fiction for people who don’t like science fiction. While I do like science fiction, I generally lose interest in the long explanations of fictional technologies that one sometimes finds in science fiction, and I appreciated the fact that The Host did not contain any of those. The fact that it was set in our own real world made for an interesting contrast with Wanderer’s alien viewpoint.
It takes about 120 pages for Wanderer to first encounter the human resistance members, and as mentioned before, those 120 pages went by rather slowly for me. My interest was not engaged in that section, and I almost gave up on the book. But after the first 120 or so pages, the plot tightens up and the book becomes quite engrossing. There is a lot of tension from the conflicts between the characters and the internal conflicts in Wanda’s heart. The moral dilemmas at the heart of the story are quite compelling, and in the middle section, the book kept me up until the wee hours of the morning.

There are some very interesting aspects to the souls’ background and the other lives that Wanderer, who is eventually nicknamed Wanda, has experienced. Even the names the souls give themselves and to some of things they’ve brought with them to earth fit the souls’ peaceful personalities, and I really liked these aspects of the worldbuilding.
But at the same time, other aspects of the worldbuilding are weak. For example, most of the souls are peace-loving, and it is not explained why enough of them would choose to be seekers and to hunt down the human fugitives. Nor were the explanations of how and why such a non-aggressive species had set out to conquer other worlds convincing to me.
There were also times, in the last quarter or so of the book, when I felt a little tired of reading about Wanderer/Wanda. All but a brief prologue is written in Wanderer/Wanda’s first person viewpoint, so I’m not sure if my Wanda fatigue was due to the fact that I rarely have the patience for spending so many pages in the POV of a single character (I almost never persist with series that follow the same main character past one or two books), or if it’s because of Wanda’s personality.

In the course of the story, Wanda ultimately becomes so self-sacrificing, sweet and sincere that at times I found her difficult to relate to. I don’t know if this would be a problem for other readers, but I prefer flawed characters and Wanda was almost too good to be true.
Also, though some of the humans initially wanted to kill Wanda, her eventual acceptance seemed too quick and too thorough to be entirely believable to me.
When the ending arrives, as heartwarming as it is (and it is very heartwarming), it is also a little like watching one of Cinderella’s stepsisters trying on the glass slipper — something doesn’t fit right. The problem is that because the body snatching premise is so dark, what I feel I know of how most human beings would respond to something like that seems to me to require a grittier tale and an ending that isn’t quite this sweet.
Combine this factor with the fact that Melanie and Wanda both seemed immature to me (albeit in very different ways), and The Host doesn’t always read like a book for adults — there is something of a YA feel to it.
Still, the concept of telling an “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” story from a body snatcher’s POV is fresh, the plot takes some unpredictable twists, the romantic conflict makes the love story different from any other that I’ve read, and all of these factors make The Host compelling enough to make me feel that I don’t regret reading it. C+ for The Host.

What was the most memorable thing about writing the host?

That would be Ian. My favourite characters are the ones who decide for themselves who they want to be. It’s the characters who stop doing what you want that make the story feel special and out of your imagination, something that seems to exist on it’s own, and that’s an interesting experience. With Ian in the beginning drafts, Ian was Kyle’s backup guy, but the first time Ian spoke he was curious why Jeb didn’t kill Wanda instantly, and his curiosity set him apart, and then he spoke with Jared and thought about what was going on because Jared refused to.

How old is Ian?

About twenty-five, and Kyle is thirty.

Who is your favourite character in the Host and why?

Ian, but I’m really fond of Jeb because he was himself from day one. I don’t know anyone like him. He was another character that when he fit in the outline he didn’t deviate from that. He was a voice in my head that I didn’t know. I liked Doc a lot, he’s like my little brother, Seth, from my website. He’s a very cool guy and a very tall guy as well.

By the time this was published I had not read the host, so I was not aware of this, here you have. Thank you and sorry :)

The big debut this week is Sherrilyn Kenyon's Acheron (St. Martin's), 12th book in her "Dark-Hunter" series about immortal warriors protecting mankind from demons. It ranks #1 this week on the fiction hardcover lists at New York Times, Washington Post, and Publishers Weekly, and #7 on USA Today's combined list.

Added here this week, though it debuted on lists a week or two ago, is Brunonia Barry's The Lace Reader (Morrow), ranking this week among the top 10 fiction hardcovers at NYT, WP, and PW.

It's about mind-readers and fortune-tellers in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts, but the backstory is at least as good: a self-published novel that sold to a major publisher and became a bestseller. (Here's an NPR interview with the author.)

Meanwhile, Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn still ranks #1 on Amazon lists (though as YA it doesn't qualify for some of the print lists), while her adult novel The Host remains in the top 10 fiction hardcovers on three of those print lists.

TEEN BOOKS AUTHOR CONNECTS WITH ADULTS, TOO

Stephenie Meyer — a teetotaling stay-at-home, Mormon mother of three young sons — is the new icon of hip among avid readers intimately familiar with the Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket books.

Her fans devour the books in Meyer's "Twilight'' series — U.S. sales climbed to more than 5.3 million this year — about a searing but chaste romance between a devastatingly moral vampire named Edward and a mortal girl, Bella, the object of his tautly reined appetites. A movie version of the first "Twilight'' book arrives in theaters next winter.
"The Host,'' published 12 weeks ago, is her first for adults, and it has proven to be as much a success as her "Twilight'' books. The book has occupied the No."‰ 2 and 3 spots on recent New York Times bestseller lists.

"The Host'' departs from the earlier series in subject. Instead of vampires, it features a disconcertingly appealing alien who takes possession of a stubborn human, giving new meaning to the phrase "being of two minds.'' But spiritually, "The Host'' is right in step with the "Twilight'' books.

There's enough torrid frisson in "The Host'' to start major fires. The characters barely touch, "but there's more sex in that one paragraph than in all the snogging in Harry Potter,'' as Time magazine's Lew Grossman put it in his recent profile of Meyer.

Yet there's nothing that last century's National Legion of Decency could reasonably censure. It's a book that Meyer's mother and children could read without blushing.

"I think of the books as very romantic,'' says the impeccably groomed Meyer, who takes her new celebrity standing more or less in stride and still feels guilty about being unable to personally answer her stacks of fan mail with the "three-page handwritten letter they all deserve."
Meyer's special gift is infusing an electricity in holding hands or kissing, similar to film director Alfred Hitchcock's talent for implying horror far more exquisite than what the camera showed.
So, though the text simmers in "Twilight'' and its sequels, "New Moon'' and "Eclipse,'' high school students Edward and Bella remain as G-rated as the Bobbsey Twins, with perhaps a superior ability to resist temptation. (Edward belongs to a coven of vampires that foreswear human blood, sustaining themselves on wild animals.)

As she was editing "The Host,'' Meyer says, she read the text aloud to her eldest son, age 12, as she did with the first "Twilight'' books. She refrained from reading him more than the first three chapters of "Breaking Dawn,'' the latest "Twilight'' book released earlier this month.
"I don't read more than that to him, because I don't trust him not to sell me out to some cute 12-year-old,'' Meyer says.
She was quite serious about that, and with good reason. Readers were frantic to know what's next.

Unlike the "Twilight" books, "The Host'' is aimed at adult readers, and it is a little darker and grittier. But adolescents are reaching past grown-ups to get copies of "The Host.''
The "Twilight" series began, famously, with a dream that awoke Meyer on June 2, 2003. It was so compelling that she immediately logged on to her husband's PC and began to type.
"What compelled me to write it down was that I have a really bad memory,'' Meyer says, "and it was a story I didn't want to lose.

"It was always a story. I was not thinking, when I wrote, 'This is a dream.' I did not think of it as a book. The important part of the dream was the conversation.''
It took just three months for Meyer to finish the initial "Twilight'' book. The others followed as quickly. Agreeing with the publisher about a book cover, she observed, often takes more time than writing the book itself.

The idea for "The Host'' took a more conventional route but arrived as wholly formed. She has outlines for two "Host" sequels and is eager to get back to that story line.
"The Host,'' Meyer says, "was an idea I had on a long road trip. I was halfway into the story, and not really sure about it when I came up with an alien in someone's body, and both the alien and that human being in love with the same man.
"I tend to see everything like a movie in my head.''

She’s thinking about two sequels to “The Host” and is working on a ghost story.“I’m just going to try and stay home and write five books next year,” Meyer says. “It may not happen, but that’s my goal. And I’m not going to let anyone see them. It’s just going to be about sitting home and writing.”

While it could be argued that Creed and Riana are more in lust than love, the second new novel I read this summer, Stephanie Meyer's "The Host," is a very human love story, even with the alien invaders.

For several years, a race of parasitic aliens has been quietly infiltrating Earth. The invasion was hard to spot because the "Souls" are implanted in living humans and take them over, no pods required.

While the "Souls" look upon themselves as benevolent and making life on Earth better, there are pockets of resistant humans who don't take kindly to being pushed out of their own mind in the name of a perfect, violence-free society.

When the "Soul" Wanderer is implanted into rebel Melanie Stryder, the hope is to pull information from Melanie's mind that will lead "Seekers" to her resistance group.
Instead Melanie bombards Wanderer with memories of her human life - the man Jared whom she loves deeply, her younger brother, the sharp quick knives that are emotions.
Soon Wanderer and Melanie are working together to reunite Melanie with Jared. What follows is a love triangle with Jared looking at the face of his former lover Melanie, whom he knows is inhabited by another, and Melanie and Wanderer sharing feelings of love and jealousy about Jared.

To complicate matters, Wanderer feels drawn to another human resistance fighter, Ian, and thus the triangle becomes a square.
I know I said summer books shouldn't be thought-provoking, but, for this one, I will make an exception. It brings up the questions: What is love? What do you fall in love with - the mind or the body? And what price should be exacted for peace?
The "Souls" are parasites - this they acknowledge. Every other species they have inhabited has allowed them in without a fight, until the humans. Should one sentient species be destroyed to let another live?

During their time together, Melanie and Wanderer learn about each other and their respective races. Wanderer learns that humans aren't as brutal and violent as she has been lead to believe, and Melanie learns that what could become the extinction of her race comes from a place of benevolence.

Maybe it’s because she’s a mother to three boys; maybe it’s just because she’s a compassionate person. But Stephenie Meyer loves to see the good in people -- even the "bad guys."
"My books really aren’t horror novels," Meyer says from her home near Phoenix.
"The vampires are a source of light in my novels. I tend to look at the bad-guy side of things -- giving them their side, letting them talk."

The vampires in question populate Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books in Meyer’s outrageously successful Twilight Saga series. The fourth, Breaking Dawn, will be published Aug. 2. Meyer’s appearance Thursday in KC is actually to talk about her first non-vampire novel, The Host.

Young-adult readers and older ones have embraced the vampire series with the kind of passion J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter elicited: millions of co? pies sold (4 million in the last 12 months alone), ardent devotion (143 weeks combined on the New York Times best-seller list), and the inevitable film adaptations - the first, “Twilight,” hits theaters Dec. 12.

As for why the books enthrall readers: There's always the old-fashioned sex appeal of vampires - the taking of blood, neck biting, the intimacy of the exchange. Yet Meyer downplays it a bit: “Since I haven't read a lot of vampire books, I really haven't absorbed that assumption. The act of sucking blood is not this sensual, sexual, romantic thing; it's a very violent, gruesome act.”

Perhaps. But these characters are teens. In Twilight, Bella Swan is a “new kid” who leaves Phoenix for a small town in Washington state, where she feels (of course) out of place.
She falls for Edward Cullen, a handsome boy vampire. As Booklist opined: “This is a book of the senses: Edward is first attracted by Bella's scent; ironically, Bella is repelled when she sees blood. Their love is palpable, heightened by their touches, and teens will respond viscerally.”

Viscerally but also safely, or at least somewhat innocently, given the fantasy setting. At the very least, the Twilight books are once removed from the realities of teen sexuality explored in such young-adult books as Meg Cabot's Ready or Not.
Tuesday, though, will bring the publication of The Host, in which Meyer will take her fans in a different direction: It's a non-Twilight novel that is ostensibly science fiction, though on her Web site (http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/) the author calls it “science fiction for people who don't like science fiction.”

Preorders already have ensured The Host's success; last week it ranked 24th on amazon.com and 19th on bn.com.
Meyer will be in Kansas City Thursday to sign and discuss the book, but according to Rainy Day Books, the thousand tickets are gone.

“It's definitely a departure in that it's a whole new cast and crew in my head,” Meyer says. “But, at the same time, I think my established readers will be comfortable with it; they'll get into the rhythm of it and find that it sounds like me. Stylistically it's very similar.”

The Host is the story of Wanderer, a member of an alien species that takes possession of human minds and bodies. Nearly all of humanity has yielded to these alien beings, but Wanderer's host, Melanie Stryder, is an especially strong human. Her will is not entirely broken; she pushes back at Wanderer, and the two minds must find a way to deal with each other.

“It's science fiction because it's about aliens,” the author says, “so there's no other way to categorize it. And I like science fiction. But this doesn't feel to me like science fiction; once you get past the basic premise, it's just about being human.”

Stephenie Meyer's hyped "The Host" (Little, Brown, $25.99, 619 pages) isn't quite as mind-bending as the jacket blurbs would lead you to believe, but it's still pretty good stuff.

The setup is solid: An alien race of parasites has invaded Earth, and through insertion into the brain stem, inhabits and changes human beings. But the hosts don't become monsters; quite the contrary. In fact, they become super-civilized, nonviolent, cooperative and pretty much happy all the time.

"The Host" is told from the point of view of one of these parasites, who takes over the human body of a young woman who was part of the tiny resistance movement that still fights the alien takeover. Once connected, she discovers that the passions of human beings are much more powerful than the emotions of submerged flowers, flying batlike beings and the others the host has inhabited in her journey across the universe.

Aside from the fact that the host is just too good and wonderful to be true, Meyer does a nice job of delineating an interesting cast of characters and sets up conflicts that flow naturally from her premises. Unfortunately, though, the "twist" at the end is obvious for about 150 pages, and speaking of 150 pages, the book would have been better minus about that many — but those two flaws can't detract from a satisfying, enjoyable read that almost lives up to the hype.

I know I said I would update on Friday but I got the chance to do this earlier so here you go.This Chapter analysis is not really about the first chapter; it's about the prologue so is not very deep or long.

At the beginning of the chapter it was totally clear that it wasn’t like any other operating room I’ve ever been to, although I’ve never been in a lot of them so I’m not really sure how to describe them. At first Stephenie made a quick description of the healer, he is shown as the kindest man in the scene and the one we should respect. When he gets irritated by the students I knew at that very moment that he wasn’t bothered by the noises the students were making but for the safety of the soul he was about to insert. I realized something was wrong when the Healer which is named Fords Deep Waters said he regrets about that day’s work.

I have to give some credit to Stephenie Meyer, dude, I want real medication like those, I mean it would be great to see on a store an announcement like “kick acne”, “kill boredom”, or even better “LEARN MATH” so I don’t have to study that subject in my life.

Getting back to the chapter, the most intense part was when he whispers to the body my favorite quote of the chapter “Good luck, little wanderer, good luck. How I wish you didn't need it.” In that moment I felt the soul was about to experiment one of the hardest times any other soul has ever had.

Personal Opinion: There couldn't have been another way to start writing this book, it shows us clearly that the story doesn't occur in a normal place or under normal situation and that the characters are about to experiment something that they'll never forget, maybe not Darren, the regular assistant because he is only there as a support character in my opinion, let's see if he plays an important part through the book or in the next 2.

A couple of months ago, while watching the Glenn Beck show on CNN, one of his guests was Stephenie Meyer, author of The Host and also known for her earlier books for teens, Twilight, New Moon, & Eclipse. So, I, being a fan of "mild Sci-Fi", I immediately went out and bought the book. Needless to say, it's a book you'll find difficult to put down until finished! The analogy I use is a 21st century version of the "Body Snatchers" but with a lot more sophistication and class!

This is Meyer's first attempt at adult fiction and no surprise, very successful, remaining on the NY Times Bestseller list for months and currently at # 6!

The world as we know it has been invaded by an unseen enemy and humans have become the host bodies for these invaders. The mind is taken over; with the body remaining intact, with a few exceptions, one "wild" human; Melanie who is captured and a "soul", Wanderer has been placed inside Melanie's body. Wanderer is able to experience Melanie's thoughts, and her past, only to experience vivid memories of Melanie's emotions, and visions of the man she loves. Melanie is so stubborn and strong willed, that she won't let go of her mind to Wanderer and eventually, the two become one fighting for the same cause. They are able to discover the remaining humans in existence, in hiding, fighting to protect what is left of humanity as we know it. It's a great read and will keep you up into the wee hours of the morning!

Ian O'shea is one of the humans who became friend with Wanderer and later falls in love with her. He has blue eyes and thick eyelashes. He is Kyle's brother and the open - minded one, at first he disliked Wanderer just like everybody else did, reaching the point of almost strangle her. Once he gets to know her, he soon realizes that even though she is not technically human, she is every bit as much a person as any of the actual humans. He is incredibly protective of her and kind in general; Wanderer states that Ian is the kindest human she's ever known, almost kind enough to be a Soul.

I was born in Connecticut in 1973, during a brief blip in my family's otherwise western U.S. existence. We were settled in Phoenix by the time I was four, and I think of myself as a native. The unusual spelling of my name was a gift from my father, Stephen (+ ie = me). Though I have had my name spelled wrong on pretty much everything my entire life long, I must admit that it makes it easier to google myself now.

I filled the "Jan Brady" spot in my family-the second of three girls. Unlike the Brady's, none of my three brothers are steps, and all of them are younger than all the girls. I went to high school in Scottsdale, Arizona, the kind of place where every fall a few girls would come back to school with new noses and there were Porsches in the student lot (for the record, I have my original nose, and never had a car until after I was in my twenties). I was awarded a National Merit Scholarship, and I used it to pay my way to Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. I majored in English, but concentrated on literature rather than creative writing, mostly because I didn't consider reading books "work" (as long as I was going to be doing something anyway, I might as well get course credit for it, right?).

I met my husband, Pancho (his real name is Christiaan), when I was four, but we were never anywhere close to being childhood sweethearts. In fact, though we saw each other at least weekly through church activities, I can't recall a single instance when we so much as greeted each other with a friendly wave, let alone exchanged actual words. This may have been for the best, because when we did eventually get around to exchanging words, sixteen years after our first meeting, it only took nine months from the first "hello" to the wedding. Of course, we were able to skip over a lot of the getting to know you parts (many of our conversations would go something like this: "This one time, when I was ten, I broke my hand at a party when-" "Yeah, I know what happened. I was there, remember?") We've been married for ten and a half years now, and have three beautiful, brilliant, wonderful boys who often remind me chimpanzees on crack.

My favorite authors/biggest influences are (in no particular order) Orson Scott Card, Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Maeve Binchy, Charlotte Bronte, Daphne DuMaurier, L.M. Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, Eva Ibbotson, William Goldman, Douglas Adams, Janet Evanovich… the list goes on, but I think I hit the highlights. I can't write without music, and my biggest muse is, ironically enough, the band Muse. My other favorite sources of inspiration are Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Coldplay, The All American Rejects, Travis, The Strokes, Brand New, U2, Kasabian, Jimmy Eat World, and Weezer, to mention a few.

Larry Carroll had an interview with Stephenie Meyer the author of the twilight saga, and this time she talked about The Soul and The Seeker, books that will follow The Host; she also talked about the cast that came she thinks could play the part for Jeb, Ian, Kyle and Jared ; so this is what she said:

MTV: Do you plan on writing "Host" sequels?

Meyer: I hope. If I were to continue on with "The Host," which is a possibility, there are characters and stories that could continue. ... If I went ahead with that, it would be two more. ... Next would be "The Soul," and then "The Seeker."

MTV: You've said that when you write, you cast actors in the roles in your head. Would you like to see a "Host" movie? Who are your dream stars?

Meyer: I would. ... With "Twilight," I felt the actors needed to be up-and-coming artists that haven't been recognized yet. ... With "The Host," I think the actors could be really big names. That would be cool. I'd love to see Robert Redford put on a beard and be Jeb; he would be amazing. ... 1. What inspired the idea for The Host?
The kernel of thought that became The Host was inspired by absolute boredom. I was driving from Phoenix to Salt Lake City, through some of the most dreary and repetitive desert in the world. It’s a drive I’ve made many times, and one of the ways I keep from going insane is by telling myself stories. I have no idea what sparked the strange foundation of a body-snatching alien in love with the host body’s boyfriend over the host-body’s protest. I was halfway into the story before I realized it. Once I got started, though, the story immediately demanded my attention. I could tell there was something compelling in the idea of such a complicated triangle. I started writing the outline in a notebook, and then fleshed it out as soon as I got to a computer. The Host was supposed to be no more than a side project—something to keep me busy between editing stints on Eclipse—but it turned into something I couldn’t step away from until it was done.

2. Did you approaching writing The Host, your first adult novel, differently than your YA series?

Not at all. Like the Twilight Saga (this is probably the only way The Host is like the Twilight Saga!), The Host is just a story I had fun telling myself. My personal entertainment is always the key to why a story gets finished. I never think about another audience besides myself while I’m writing; that can wait for the editing stage.

3. You have referred to The Host as being a science fiction novel for people who don't like science fiction. Can you explain why?

Reading The Host doesn’t feel like reading science fiction; the world is familiar, the body you as the narrator are moving around inside of is familiar, the emotions on the faces of the people around you are familiar. It’s very much set in this world, with just a few key differences. If it weren’t for the fact that alien stories are by definition science fiction, I wouldn’t classify it in that genre.

4. There is a lot of internal dialogue between Wanderer, the narrator and invading "soul", and Melanie, the human whose body Wanderer is now living inside. Each character has her own distinct voice and internal struggle. Was it a challenge to have the two characters, who essentially take up one body, stand on their own?

Wanderer and Melanie were very distinct personalities to me from day one; keeping them separate was never an issue. Melanie is the victim—she’s the one that we, as humans, should identify with; at the same time, she is not always the more admirable character. She can be angry and violent and ruthless. Wanderer is the attacker, the thief. She is not like us, not even a member of our species. However, she is someone that I, at least, wish I was more like. She’s a better person than Melanie in a lot of ways, and yet a weaker person. The differences between the two main characters are the whole point of the story. If they weren’t so distinct, there would have been no reason to write it.

5. Did any of the characters surprise you while writing?

I am constantly surprised by my characters when I write—it’s really one of my favorite parts. When a character refuses to do what I had planned for him or her, that’s when I know that character is really alive. There were several characters who caught me off guard with The Host. One in particular was slated for a bit part as the wingman to the villain. Somehow, he knew he was more than that, and I couldn’t stop him from morphing into a main love interest.

6. Your Twilight series has had a lot of crossover appeal for adult readers, do you think The Host will also appeal to your younger readers?

I’ve had a great deal of interest from my YA readers about the release of The Host. I have no doubt that they will continue to make up a core part of my readership. I love blurring the lines between the different genres and categories—because in my head, a good book won’t fit inside the lines. I hope that The Host continues to do what the Twilight Saga is doing: showing that a good story doesn’t belong to any one demographic.

7. How do you feel about the enormous success that you’ve had with the Twilight series? How has it changed your life?

I am continually shocked by the success of my books. I never take it for granted, and I do not count on it in my expectations of my future. It’s a very enjoyable thing, and I’ll have fun with it while it lasts. I’ve always considered myself first and foremost a mother, so being a writer hasn’t changed my life too much – except I do travel a lot more and have less free time.

8. What adult authors do you read?

I’ve been reading books for adults my entire life. Growing up I was an avid reader—the thicker the book, the better. Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, The Sword of Shannara, Jane Eyre, Rebecca, etc. I’m a huge fan of Orson Scott Card, and Jane Austen-- I can’t go through a year without re-reading her stuff again.

9. What’s next?

I’m currently finishing writing the fourth book in the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn, which will wrap up Bella and Edward’s story. I plan to then write Midnight Sun, which is Twilight told from Edward’s perspective. After that, I may write some sequels for The Host, or a may pull another outline from my files to play with. I won’t stop writing; there are too many stories I want to tell.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Hi guys!

So, a week ago I began reading The Host because I knew that if it came from Stephenie Meyer it had to be good. I've been following her since twilight, new moon, eclipse and soon breaking dawn, so, I thought:" well I don't speak english and the book has not come out in spanish yet". The first thing that came to my mind was "Let's read it in english". Not that I haven't done that in my life, is just that I haven't done that with more than 40 pages; so here I am obsessed with her new book and looking forward to succeed with this blog I hope you all like it and well let's see how things work out. :)

I thought it might be hard at first but this girl called Kayla Opall has been helping me with the things I don't get. Thank you for that and also for all the music you've been giving me =). You can
